Tom Billings, General Manager 1951-1952, tells us that Lou Marini, the
concessions manager back then, experimented with giving
away free bags of salted popcorn to customers as they walked into the tent to
try to build sales of his very expensive soda-pop at intermission time. The soda was good stuff
of a little known prestige brand in 6 oz. bottles (maybe "Hoffman") that Lou sold for 15
cents in an era when a bottle of Coke still cost only five cents.
