Born in Charleston, SC, Carlyn attended San Diego State College in California and made her professional debut at the at of 13. She toured the US with Kovach and Rabousky and "American Dances." She made a European tour with the Dance Drama Company. As a singer-actress she played Polly in "The Boy Friend" and Ivy in "On the Town" at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego and Louise in "Carousel" with the San Diego Civic Light Opera Company.
